‘OUR DIGITALLY ENHANCED LIVES IN THE 2020’s’
Since the emergence of the internet in the mid-nineties, there has been a breathtaking explosion of technologies (exploiting 24/7 connectivity, ubiquity & speed of broadband, miniaturization, mobility, the Cloud ), devices (smartphones, iPads, wearables, implantables) & platforms (social media, Facebook, eBay). As a society we expected improvements in our standard of living, industry productivity & competitiveness, & community cohesion. But has this occurred as expected?
Are the benefits of innovation colliding with the risks of job displacement (by robots & artificial intelligence), forfeiture of personal information & loss of privacy, development of algorithmic ‘black boxes’ which claim decision rights over human judgements, & distracting capture of the young by the virtual world? The next decade should see critical steps taken –technological ones but perhaps more importantly in matters of public policy.
Be more informed about the possibilities for our digital world that lie ahead….
