Elgee Park '777' Pinot Noir

A very special one-off release from Elgee Park. This wine is named after the single clone used to make it. The 777 clone was planted in 2008, 20 years after the original Pinot Noir plantings. It was selected for its short vegetative cycle which is ideal for our local climate. It’s renowned for fruit power & tannin structure due to the small compact bunches, natural low yields & thick skins of the berries. Limited quantities.

PALATE

This elegant & structured pinot noir shows beautiful red fruits reflective of the nose with savoury undertones. Framed by plentiful fine-grained tannins which will reward those patient enough to cellar it.

VINTAGE

Budburst was early this year which resulted in flowering with good fruit set. The warm ripening period saw harvest commence a week sooner than normal. Yields were reported as high – average with fine acidity retention & excellent balanced flavours.

WINEMAKING

It was destemmed to small open fermenters & allowed to ferment with the naturally-occurring yeast on the grapes. Fermentation was completed over the next week, with only gentle maceration of hand plunging to mix the skins through the wine to extract the colour & tannins. The wine then spent another two weeks on skins to further build the structure of the wine before pressing & transferring to French oak barrels, one third of which were new, for maturation. The wine was given one racking off remaining lees in early Spring then returned to barrel for further maturation & to clarify. The wine was bottled on February 19th, 2020, & given further maturation in bottle prior to release.
